Introduction
Important Law Changes
- Red Light Cameras / Infraction detectors - Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, County and local law enforcement are authorized to use traffic infraction detectors to enforce red light violations.
- Drivers are limited in the number of traffic school elections they may make in order to avoid points on record, to no more than 5 in a lifetime.
- Tax Collectors and Clerks of the Court are authorized to see individual driver record histories.
Effective 09/01/10
- Drivers of commercial motor vehicles are required to slow before crossing railroad tracks.
- Must remain in a bicycle lane if a lane is provided. If a specified lane is not provided, bicyclist must stay as close as practicable to the right.
- A global positioning system device may be placed on a windshield if it does not hinder the driver's line of sight.
- The minimum fine for speeding in a designated school crossing is $50.
- Operation of motorized scooter or miniature motorcycles on sidewalks is recognized, if approved by local ordinance.
- Motorized wheel chairs may be operated on a sidewalk
Effective 10/01/10
- A commercial driver who fails to surrender his out of state license when making an application for a Florida license commits a non-criminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation.
- It is a violation for any person who driver license has been expired for more than 6 months to operate a motor vehicle on the highways of this state.
