If you've never had a Florida license, there are three things you need to do:
"I really liked the use of video in your online Florida license class. Four hours didn't seem as long as I thought it would! I will recommend this course to everyone I know."
– Garrett S., Gainesville
The State of Florida requires that every first time driver complete a DHSMV-approved Florida license class that teaches young drivers the dangers of driving after drinking or using drugs (§322.095, Florida Statutes). The Florida license class, or drug and alcohol class, must be four hours long, but it can be taken ONLINE and broken up into sessions. You can sign up here to take this course online.
To get a driver license in Florida, you must also carefully study the Florida Driver Handbook. The Florida Drivers Handbook is full of important information that every driver HAS to know, such as when drivers and pedestrians are required to yield, what to do in a driving emergency, and the meanings of traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings.
Florida license requirements also state that all new drivers must pass a multiple-choice exam that tests the driver's knowledge of Florida traffic law and road signs. This exam is usually known as a driver license test, but some other popular names for it include Class E test, Class E license exam, Learner Permit Exam, and Florida license test. Students are asked 20 questions on each of the two parts of the exam (total of 40 questions).
You can take this exam at a Florida license office.
You must also pass your vision and driving tests and present the appropriate documents supporting your identity in order to get a Florida driver license.
For other requirements pertaining to your Florida license, visit the DHSMV website. You can also read the licensing requirements listed on this website under how to get a Florida drivers license.
Important note about the Florida license course: You don't have to take the Florida license / drug and alcohol course if you have a driver license from any U.S. state. Drivers with licenses from other countries might have to take this course. If you are not sure, call your local Florida license office for help.
