Here are the four steps you need to take to get your first Florida driver license (learner permit):

  1. FIRST, you need to complete the 4-hour drug and alcohol class that the State of Florida requires for every first time driver. You can now take this course online! Sign up for the drug and alcohol class right here. This course covers topics ranging from alcohol and substance abuse to the dangers of drinking and driving. You can take this course before your 15th birthday.
  2. SECOND, before you take your Florida driver license test, you need to study the Florida Driver's Handbook. The Florida driver handbook will teach you important safety information that will help protect you out on Florida's roadways. Also, the questions on your driver license test (road signs and road rules) are taken from the State of Florida driver handbook, not from your drug and alcohol course.
  3. THIRD, you can take your driver license test at the driver license office. Here's more good news – you can take your driver license test before your 15th birthday.
  4. FOURTH, check with the Florida DHSMV to find out what else you need to do in order to get a Florida Driver License. You can review learner permit requirement information at the DHSMV website. Some of the additional licensing requirements you will have to meet include passing a driving skills test, passing a vision test, and submitting the appropriate documentation to confirm your identity.

IMPORTANT: You do not have to take the drug and alcohol class if you already have a Florida Driver License, you are licensed in another state, or you are licensed in a country acknowledged by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
