To get your Florida driver learner permit, you must take this 4-hour course that is required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The course teaches exactly why it is so dangerous to operate a motor vehicle after drinking or using drugs.

Other names for this State required class include the TLSAE course, TLSAE online, or drug and alcohol class.

After you finish your Florida driver learner permit course, you can take your driver license test at a local DHSMV office.

IMPORTANT: You must study the Florida Drivers Handbook before attempting the driver license test. Your learner permit course does not prepare you for the driver license test, which includes questions on Florida road rules and road signs.

Special note about the Florida driver learner permit course: Florida law (§322.095) requires that anyone who has never been issued a Florida driver license must complete a State-approved learner permit course before applying for his or her first Florida license.

This requirement does not apply to someone who has a driver license from another state or another country, provided that the country is recognized by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
